Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre) – the water comes down

Gouache on watercolour paper

Flooding Autumn rains in Queensland flowed down through Channel Country to fill Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre in 2025. On the lands of the Arabana Traditional Owners, this vast salt lake has an area of around 9,700 square kilometres – it has filled with floodwaters only three times in 160 years, making this a special year. The waters slowly move southward through the Cooper Creek system, along channels, waterholes, floodplains and wetlands to fill the lake over several months. Flying low over Kati Thanda in June, I witnessed this rare spectacle. It is impossible to record a single view of this place. My work shows fragments of Kati Thanda, as water merges with salt, soil and sky.
