Water based ink intaglia print on Paper

Artistic documentation of Australia’s flora celebrated abundance of species in the past. We now face an alarming decline in our biodiversity, particularly our unique flora. Human activity, climate change, and invasive species are implicated.
This delicate rare flower, Cushion Leschenaultia grows only in small numbers in the sandy scrub across the Avon Wheatbelt and Jarrah forests in Western Australia.
This vulnerable species highlights the fact that such flora often survives in small unique ecosystems and are conservation dependent. My work presents one delicate specimen to draw our attention to the need to consider how we can care for our own local habitat to arrest the growing decline of species.
The intaglio engraving process employs water-based ink applied à la poupée to achieve the colour gradation in the specimen. The size is larger than life to shout out about its’ circumstance.
