The wind murmurs an ancient song

watercolour, charcoal and aquarelle on 300gsm Bockingford paper

The wind murmurs an ancient song, echoing the enduring spirit of the land. Nestled in the arid northeast of South Australia, the Arckaringa Hills rise from the Painted Desert, situated within the ecologically fragile region known as The Breakaways. This area is renowned for its delicate balance of environmental importance. The landscape here is characterised by unique topographical features shaped by relentless weathering and erosion.
Working with watercolour, charcoal and aquarelle pencils the hills form in colour and beauty on my watercolour paper. Layering paint as the layers of coloured sands are before me I gradually build the structure of the landscape. Finishing with charcoal and aquarelle pencil allows me to add the texture and ruggedness of the environment, depicting gesturally the lines and forms of the rocks and bushes imbuing a sense of atmosphere that I found while sitting there sketching the preliminary drawings for this work.
