memorial 1-4

Belinda Allen

2025

Collage on watercolour paper: botanical print, inkjet and laser print, vintage letters, stitching.

Memorial acknowledges historical and ongoing experience of loss in contemporary Australian life. Botanical prints of eucalypts are overlaid with digital collages of burnt bush from the 2019-2020 NSW bushfires, images of extinct native animals, as depicted by early settler artists, and fragments of 40 year-old personal letters that were shredded by rats for their nests.

In the ‘Landscape & memory’ series (2020-present) I wish to acknowledge invisible histories in the Australian landscape. The landscape is not empty and pristine, but is layered with memories and stories of those who have gone before.

I have worked for many years in a variety of printing, photographic and digital media, sometimes incorporating painting, drawing and stitching. My photographic and mixed-media work explores landscape in the context of human relationship to environment, culture and heritage.
