From the Sea II (after von Guerard) focuses on the turbulence of a storm ridden sea: seabirds circling and soaring, clouds scudding across the sky, flickering light over the waves and the solid darkness of the dolerite cliffs of the Tasman Peninsular. From Bruny Island where I live, I observe and sketch these steep sea cliffs. These columnar cliffs are characteristic of the Tasmanian natural environment.

In my multi-panel woodblock print I have deliberately used natural materials, wood blocks printed in shades of indigo. As a starting point, I looked at von Guerard’s 1855 sketches made from the sea and his 1866 lithograph South End of Tasman’s Island as well as my own sketches made in a boat anchored off the Tasman Peninsular, wallowing in swells coming up from the Southern Ocean.
