Gouache, watercolour, rain and crayon on archival paper

Moment #48 is the outcome of my exploration into how paint can be manipulated to embody natural processes evoking the atmosphere. Created in collaboration with the rain and wind, the process involved wetting the ground with pigmented water and then holding it under the rain, often in windy conditions. The overlaying motif is a representation of mammary clouds; a cloud formation which appear as rounded pouches or bulges hanging underneath the base of a cloud. The motif evokes the large breasts depicted in Paleolithic art, such as the Venus of Willendorf. The breasts are exaggerated and sagging, which to me speaks of female strength and the wisdom of aging—rather than the sexualized, patriarchal version we’re so often presented with today. In this way, I see the mammary clouds as a symbol of female power and our ancient connection to the natural environment.
