Subterranean

Fabriano paper, pigment ink, book cloth

This work has been incubating for quite some time. Its seeds were sown several years ago when I made a series of small ghost relief prints which spoke to me louder than the project I was actually working on. I knew I had to give them a different life, and they waited patiently until I got around to deciding exactly what that life should be. Finally they spoke. I changed the scale of the original images, reprinting them large, and placed them in a sequence to create this hidden subterranean world – a world both literal and figurative, with secrets to be explored as the pages turn and you wend your way through the dark landscape. I love the indelible ghostly nature, the evocative otherworldliness and coal black underground moodiness.
