Gumnuts (Eucalyptus Rhodantha)

Open bite etching

I came across this specimen of Eucalyptus Rhodantha in the botanical gardens in Kings Park, Perth, alongside many other species I had never seen before. It stood out for the drama of its bold shapes and shadows and patterning. Eucalyptus Rhodantha or Rose Mallee, is normally shown in colour for its silver leaves and red flowers, but I love to create botanical etchings in black and white, to focus on the details and the light, to invite a different gaze and attention. I have since discovered that it is endangered and am pleased to have documented it.
I am a frequent visitor to botanical gardens (as well as the actual bush) and appreciate the role they play in nurturing, preserving and presenting flora such as this.
