View from Bunjils Cave to Gariwerd

Amanda Blake-Sutterby

2025

Watercolour and gouache

My painting presents a tranquil and expansive natural landscape that encapsulates some of my most treasured childhood memories.

The massive exposed granite rocks are painted in the foreground. They immediately anchor the viewer, grounding them, while the vast expanse of Gariwerd stretches out like a memory unfolding. Bunjil’s Cave is a special place, one of perspective and presence. Standing at this ancient vantage point, you feel the quiet power of the land—its deep time, stories and stillness.

This work seeks to honor the significance of the site, especially its connection to Bunjil, the creator spirit in many First Nations cultures. The soft hues of the sky represent dusk, when the veil between worlds feels thinner and reflection comes naturally.

I invite viewers to breathe and reconnect with nature and history. It’s a quiet offering, a visual poem of reverence and respect.
