Angophora on the Edge

Peter Warner

2025

Acrylic

The painting is of an angophora tree clinging to life by the waters edge on Pittwater north of Sydney. I
have lived at Mackerel Beach on Pittwater off and on for 30 years. This angophora tree by the waters edge was once protected by a dune studed with casuarina trees. One by one the forest of casuarina trees have fallen into the sea, as the dune has retreated over the last 30 years . The sea now laps close to the old angophora’s roots. The silhouette of her lyrical branches and trunk against the azure sea are beautiful. Her roots go deep into the cracks and of the sandstone rock and she will endure much longer than the casuarinas. I know she will eventually suffer the fate of the casuarinas. I hope she will outlast me.
