Are we there yet

Qun Zhang

2025

Watercolour, pastel

Are we there yet depicts the Mirranatwa Gap in the Grampians National Park after a bushfire. Rendered in watercolour, pastel and charcoal, the work captures the stark beauty and haunting stillness of a landscape marked by loss and renewal. Delicate washes of pigment and ashen tones evoke both fragility and endurance, the quiet persistence of life emerging from devastation.

The title recalls a familiar refrain from childhood road trips to the Grampians that now carries a deeper urgency. “Are we there yet?” becomes a question of climate consciousness, of our collective journey toward an uncertain future. While recovery may offer moments of hope, the work stands as a reminder of our short memory and continuing inaction. It is a meditation on place, time, and responsibility, asking how the landscapes we love reflect both our vulnerability and our desire to begin again.
