Dragonfly Summer

coloured pencil frottage from linocut on kozo paper

‘Dragonfly Summer’ is a direct response to the movement and energy of dragonflies in the peak of summer heat and bright shifting light. Grasses and sticks found in situ were dipped in ink and used to draw directly onto a lino plate surface, the swiftly made marks then carved into the plate over several months. Frottage from the lino plate onto kozo paper with coloured pencils followed, a way to mimic the transparent and shimmery quality of the dragonflies.
My practice is grounded in the physicality of drawing. It is a gestural and collaborative response with the natural environment and a way to make sense of the world and my place in it.
I wish to imbue a sense of childlike wonder in the natural world, the connection with nature as simple as a coloured pencil in hand.
