Algal Bloom

Algae Bloom tackles the ecological effects of algae on the edges of land and water, caused by rising temperatures and pollution. Algal blooms prevent sunlight transmission and consequently, oxygen formation.
Smooth, dark expanses of colour are anxious entry points that depict the underwater ‘dead zones’ where sea life cannot survive. A white floating island of the algal bloom becomes a tidal raft heading for the shore, while green and blue tones further delineate space, depth and shadow within the image. With the dripping and pouring of paint, I attempt to articulate linked tensions of loss and grief.

Relationships between the climate crisis, water, and human integration into urban environments are explored as stories of how humans relate to land and sea, to country, or to place.
