An Accusatory Stare (Toolache Wallaby)

Kat Parker

2024

Linocut and watercolour on fairytale book pages, timber, UV resin, glue

The toolache wallaby was a victim of its own beauty and agility. This species was once found in South Australia and Victoria and was considered to be one of the most beautiful and graceful of all wallabies. Due to its features, it was hunted for both sport and pelt. Hunting, extensive habitat destruction to make way for agricultural land, and predation by introduced foxes, caused this wallaby’s extinction.

This sculpture was created by meticulously layering second-hand fairytale book pages printed with a life-size linocut of the toolache wallaby’s head.

An Accusatory Stare (Toolache Wallaby) serves as a memorial for this species; creating an opportunity to lament the loss of this animal, whilst also reminding us of the devastating impact our actions can have on the natural world.
