Between Hope and Despair

Sharon Monk

2025

Metal point drawing using aluminium, bismuth, silver, bronze , coloured and graphite pencil sculpted and layered paper ,24ct gold leaf, shellac chalk paint ground

Environmental despair and a need for hope are the foundations of my art practice, symbolism a conceptual framework.
In this drawing a Bush Stone Curlew challengingly stares out at the viewer. These birds symbolise bad luck and death, a warning.
Eggs, a long held symbol of hope, regeneration, nurturing, floating to oblivion in a darkened sky, one cracked, oversized, lost . All showing the fragility of hope.
A Key’s Matchstick Grasshopper representing optimism as they were once thought extinct here but rediscovered in 2018.
The tenacity of plant life, here a Chocolate Lily sculpted in paper and tearing the work in half as it pushes through the gold leaf symbol of man’s greed.
A field of weeds , not all meant to be part of our environment but the appeal of ‘Bunny Tail’ grass clouding our judgement.
This is a quiet piece upon first look, with and underlying sadness.
