Ghost Flowers

John Derrick

2024

Giclee print on paper

This image originally started off as a pastel drawing of a bunch of native Australian flowers in a jug on the kitchen bench at my home. The flowers came from my daughter who works as a florist assistant and would often bring home flowers from her workplace that haven’t sold to place in our kitchen. I digitized the pastel drawing using image manipulation software on my computer pushing a traditional still life subject in different directions and created a digital print of the image. The result was an apparition or ghost-like image of flowers in a glass jug suggestive of the fragility of our plant species and how we need to look after and protect our rich diversity of native plant life.
