Kissing the Earth 2

Maggie Stein

2025

Linoprint, collage and ink

“There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground”.

These words are from Rumi, the revered 13th century Persian poet and scholar.

In my mind, kissing the earth is akin to worshipping and deeply appreciating nature.
Being on a rock platform like this, had a visceral effect on me. While the starting point was a real life experience, memories of similar places and the emotions they have given rise to come back to me when I’m carving.

When I’m absorbed in the process, I can become totally immersed and in the “flow”, finding moments of joy in fresh marks, working in a meditative state. The tiny molecules of mineral quartz I am rendering, remind me of our own insignificant place in this gigantic universe.
This unique print is a departure from the original black and white image. Using chine colle, I have created another layer, of playful colour.
