Mantilla of memory

Claire Beausein

2025

Artist dyed wild silk cocoons, beads and thread on double shadow print on matt bromide paper

As dusk descends, the mantilla of darkness falls, revealing the immense, sparkling cosmos. Mantilla of Memory reflects on the rhythms of nature, renewal, and the fragile continuities that sustain life. Formed in fragments, like the images gathered by the James Webb telescope, the work mirrors how an understanding of ecosystems, habitats, and the universe, emerges through accumulation. Wild silk cocoons float over a double shadow print of the same cocoons, woven into a veil. Focused and blurred, they evoke the delicate balance of life in constant flux.
The work suggests habitats in transformation, where past and present coexist, reminding us of the interconnected cycles that sustain all living systems. White thread traces imagined pathways through time, echoing ancient starlight across vast distances, connecting the smallest forms of life to the unfolding immensity of the universe.
