Trees have many values both inherent and imposed upon them. The conflict arising from discord in these values always seems to polarise conservation and forestry camps. The dilemma we face, namely, human hypocrisy and a disconnect between our wants and our needs. I ask myself, “What does it mean to own a rural property with native forest?” I love timber and I love trees. This work reflects on this question, and the search for solutions to management of rural land alongside conservation of forest biodiversity.
