Summer Yantra

cicada wings on paper

Mantra articulates the subtle order of reality through sound, while Yantra manifests it through form.
The convergence of multiple Cicada life cycles globally, expressed itself in an extraordinary natural event that defined the summer of 2024–2025 on Australia’s East Coast around my home. This pair of works emerges from, and celebrates, that rare, ephemeral phenomenon. The intensity of the event, waves of sound pulsing and droning at near-physical density, transformed the landscape into an immersive auditory field. Then collected wings of the ‘short-lived singers’ became both the embodiment and metaphor for it. The persistent ‘shrill’ functioned as a mantra. The intricate structural zigzag patterns of the Cicadas wings appeared to visually encode the same vibrational energy, forming a yantra. I believe, Summer Mantra & Summer Yantra present a visceral and conceptual lens for expressing this natural event as a synthesis of sensory experience and natural cycles, presented through symbolic structure.
