When the Chunck Meets the Sky

Hua Li

2024

Oil stick, Fineliner pen

Hua Li asserts that nature is the ultimate artist, and our role is to capture and reconstruct its beauty. In this drawing on handmade paper, blue pen and oil stick were used to capture the tangible weight and texture of a tree trunk to celebrate the tree’s unique details – knots, scars, and twists – as a testament to its resilience in a harsh yet beautiful environment. Through meticulous strokes, the piece attempts to immortalise a moment of connection between earth and sky, a dialogue embodied by a tree standing tall against the endless void.

When the Chunk Meets the Sky is a visual ode to survival, adaptation, and the timeless narratives found in nature.
